Strong Start: UBFC Claims Silver at the CFL Opening Cup
By: Neil Patrick G. Nepomuceno
The UnionBank Football Club (UBFC) opened its 2026 season strong, securing a 2nd Place finish in Division 3 of the Corporate Football League (CFL) Opening Cup, held in Bridgetowne, Pasig City.
Marking the team’s first competitive appearance of the year, the tournament reflected both promising stretches and new challenges as the squad worked to regain rhythm and cohesion against a competitive field of corporate teams.
In the Division 3 Finals, UBFC once again faced GLOBE FC. The team surged to an early 2–0 lead, demonstrating attacking confidence and composure under pressure. The Telecom’s Football club gathered momentum and overturned the match to close at 2–4. While the result fell short of the championship, UBFC’s overall performance showcased the team’s steady progress throughout the tournament.
Reflecting on the campaign, UBFC’s Ryan Matsuda shared, “Despite the fluctuations throughout the campaign, the experience provided valuable insights that the club will carry forward in preparation for future competitions.”
The team showed resilience, particularly on matchdays when player availability was limited. Even with a shortened bench, the squad persevered and delivered its best effort in every fixture.
Special recognition is extended to Randy Salisad and Justin Rivera for their exceptional control and composure in midfield, and to Sir Joey Rufo for his consistent support and contributions from the wings. Their efforts were instrumental in driving UBFC’s strong showing in the tournament.
With momentum on its side and experience gained from a hard-fought final, UBFC steps into the rest of the season not just as runners-up, but as a team rising.
UBFC remains committed to continuous improvement, carrying forward the lessons from this campaign to elevate its performance in upcoming competitions. The team warmly welcomes every UnionBanker—regardless of skill level, to join tryouts or show their support on matchdays as part of the growing UBFC community.
The journey continues.
