Shifting Gears to DevSecOps: Value Stream Mapping

Shifting Gears to DevSecOps: Value Stream Mapping

The Day 3 of the onboarding was opened by Mr. Ramon Duarte, Transaction Banking Center and Platform Development Head. Mr. Duarte himself is one of the pioneers of transformation in the Banking industry and carried it on in UnionBank.

In his opening speech, Mr. Duarte pointed out the importance of DevSecOps in taking our transformation to the next level. He shared how the Bank’s digital transformation helped him propel his career in the Bank and could be such for the Pilot Teams too. Here’s an excerpt from his inspirational opening for the Day 3 onboarding.

DevSecOps is tremendously transformational. It goes beyond anything we’ve already accomplished in agile. This really brings in a whole new language but also a very well-structured approach in the way we do our work, in the way we live our ethos of being a digital bank.

I personally have benefitted from UnionBank’s digital transformation…and it will be a driver for your career. Take advantage of the opportunity and learn from this. Teach us, teach me what you will learn from DevSecOps. It is exactly this kind of thinking that has brought UnionBank to where we are today.”

Day 3 Onboarding and Value Stream Mapping

It also details how the Value Stream Teams (VSTs) can plan sprints, address backlogs, run effective retrospectives, and resolves issues along the delivery pipeline.

Through the help of the partners from Deloitte, the VSTs also had a sprint planning session for their first two sprints. Deloitte did a walkthrough with the VSTs, where they started creating the value stream map for their initial expected outputs for their respective projects.

Teams Venus and Storm had a first-hand experience in:

1. Drawing the current state.

2. Determining the future state.

3. Grouping handoffs and the enabling functions that they need to work with.

4. Planning how to arrive at the future state.

Commitment Board

The Pilot Teams ended the three days of onboarding with meaningful commitments to the next step of the Bank’s transformation. Here are some of them:

“I commit to learn, unlearn, and relearn – to fully understand and put into action the DevSecOps way of working.”

“I commit to improving the way I work with the help of this new framework.”

“I will adapt to this new way of working for better output for clients/customers.”

By this time, Project Storm and Project Venus are ready to adopt newer ways of working for them to work in a DevSecOps environment. UnionBank aims to build more Value Stream Teams who will deliver products, services, and platforms to our customers faster, smarter, and safer. Watch out for more of them soon!
