Goals Beyond the Field: UnionBankers Empower the Next Generation Through Sports

By: Neil Patrick G. Nepomuceno

Fueled by the desire to empower aspiring athletes and set a positive example for the children of Lanao del Norte, UnionBank Volunteers organized a fun-filled and exciting day for the students of Jose Balazo Memorial Elementary School, in Lanao Del Norte.

Through the initiative of UnionBank Branch Ambassador, Jeff Ryan Omlan, more than 12 UnionBank volunteers took on the opportunity to visit the underserved community and raise awareness of sports and financial literacy.

The team began their journey early in the morning. Due to the long travel time, they stopped at a roadside karenderia for breakfast before meeting the beneficiaries.

“We travelled as early as 6 a.m. from Iligan to our destination. Along the way, we stopped by a small karenderia for breakfast. Simple meal, pero lami kaayo—especially with the cool weather and knowing we had a long day ahead. When we finally arrived, we immediately felt the warmth of the community. Makita nimo ang welcoming smiles sa mga bata, ug dili lang sila ang nalipaypati ilang parents kay klaro kaayo ang excitement sa ilang mga mata.” – Jeff Ryan Omlan

As the volunteers prepared the gear and inflated the balls, the children were already in motion—giggling here and running there, their shouts of “Wow!” echoing through the air. Their energy was infectious, filling the space far more than the rain ever could.

Before the official turnover, Jeff sat down with the coaches and parents for a brief talk on financial literacy. The session focused on simple but meaningful lessons on budgeting and saving. It is vital that while we foster children’s growth through sports, we also empower the adults who guide them toward a stable future.

To cap off the event, the volunteers hosted a fun, juggling competition for the kids. With everyone cheering, laughing, and celebrating every attempt, the team ended the day by giving snacks to all who attended—a small gesture to thank them for their energy, participation, and warm welcome.

Inspired by his former professor who was a sports advocate, and being a former student athlete himself, Jeff understands the importance of supporting the young aspiring athletes in their region.

“Sports have given me countless opportunities as a child growing up. As a football varsity in college, I am able to enjoy benefits such as tuition fee privilege, stipend allowance, travelling to other cities and etc.” Said Jeff.

“The talent was always there, but I noticed the lack of proper sports equipment that hinders the growth of potential athletes in Iligan. Those who were able to train and compete with fellow players were able to avail full Varsity Scholars in Manila and Cebu.”

Not only do they compete at a higher level, but they are also enjoying the benefits of being a varsity while studying in top universities like UP Diliman, UP Cebu, San Beda, and many more.

Despite the rain, and the challenges, the day became a reminder that when a community comes together, hope and joy always rise above the storm. Empowering youth through football was not just about providing equipment—it was about building dreams, strengthening bonds, and reminding every child that they are seen, valued, and capable of achieving great things.

Through Go Beyond Communities, UnionBank remains committed to uplifting communities nationwidecontinuously encouraging its people to step forward, lead with heart, and help shape a better future—on the field and beyond.
