Network Transformation: Sophistication and agile network infrastructure
By: Isiah Beltrano
Creating meaningful experiences, innovative services, and solutions have always been Union Bank of the Philippines’ credo. Trailblazing digital banking in the Philippines, one must adapt to the fast-changing phase of the modern age. UnionBank has proven to be an innovator, and as UnionBankers, we are forward thinkers with the ability to co-create innovations for a better world.

Our Network Architecture and Operations team is working tirelessly to migrate old traditional networks to a more simplified but agile infrastructure.
The team challenged themselves during the planning on transforming the network into a more simplified but agile, and future-proof infrastructure. It came up with SDN (Software Defined Network) Solution for the Phase 1 Network Transformation. SDN is a state-of-the-art system that enables the network intelligently and centrally with the help of software applications—securing redundant links of all Networks Infrastructure devices, minimizing, and preventing downtime. Our current monolithic enterprise architecture has limitations that impede us from the delivery of the ideal services.

This project is very beneficial to all UnionBankers because it maintains the network. The Network migration benefits all UnionBankers because we get close to 100% reliability in a secure environment. A team must work 24/7 to ensure all network connectivity and report any network service disruptions, preventing future downtime. The goal is to have a 100% uptime in the network infrastructure once the fully executed migration. The fastest it has ever been.

This project is quite ambitious and grand. And to be able to pull off in it the midst of the pandemic shows how passionate our Network Architecture and Operations team are. And their goals are more significant than their setbacks. The right mindset, grit, and determination show how far U can go— the UnionBank leadership team acknowledges the teams responsible for the project and the leaders behind it, Jigz Bagsic, Paulo Martin Santos, and Dennis Omila.
