On February 22, 2024, UnionBank of the Philippines, in partnership with The Medical City (TMC) and the Cardiovascular Institute, hosted the CVI Heart Camp at the 17th floor of UBP Plaza. This initiative, organized by HR’s Occupational Safety and Health Division, aimed to enhance employee awareness about cardiovascular health.

The event provided UnionBank employees with valuable opportunities for health assessment and education. In celebration of the Philippine Heart Month, employees enjoyed complimentary health screenings, including Electrocardiograms (ECG), Blood Pressure, and Blood Sugar checks. With physicians from The Medical City (TMC) onsite, individuals received personalized consultations and expert medical advice, all conveniently located within their workplace.

In the afternoon session, a Lecture on Hypertension and Heart Attack prevention was held. The lecture delved into essential insights about managing hypertension and recognizing the signs of a heart attack. This knowledge equips employees with the tools to make informed decisions about their cardiovascular health.

The highlight of the day was the “Basic Life Support for the Lay Rescuer. Led by skilled cardiology fellows from TMC, participants engaged in a hands-only CPR training session that equipped the audience with life-saving skills. Employees learned about basic life support, including the fundamentals of CPR, the 5C’s, and proper compression techniques.

The training went beyond theory as attendees actively participated in return demonstrations, allowing them to experience firsthand the physical aspects of administering compressions. This approach enhanced their understanding and confidence in responding to cardiac emergencies.

The session also addressed the legal and ethical considerations surrounding CPR intervention. The Good Samaritan Law, which offers protection to individuals providing aid in emergencies, was briefly discussed. This aimed to encourage employees to act promptly in administering CPR, even if it may lead to potential risks like broken ribs.

Emphasizing the urgency of immediate action, the doctors reiterated the importance of not hesitating to initiate compressions. Rescuers have only 4-7 minutes of “golden time” before irreversible brain damage occurs due to oxygen deprivation. This highlights the critical role of early intervention in increasing the chances of survival for individuals who are under cardiac arrest.

Through a comprehensive approach that involved practical training and insightful discussions, the training session equipped attendees with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to respond effectively to emergencies.

Through the CVI Heart Camp, UnionBank stays dedicated in cultivating a culture of health and wellness in the workplace. By empowering employees with knowledge and practical life-saving skills, the Bank can safeguard the health and safety of its workforce.
